Continuing towards Via della Conciliazione you will arrive at the St. Peter’s Basilica, which stands in the centre of the square designed by Bernini. Here you can admire the famous Vatican Obelisk and the wonderful fountains of Bernini (1675) and Maderno (1614).

Food and wine and cinematographic routes by visiting Rome on your own

Here are some tips to get off the beaten track and take the initiative to discover Rome on your own, absent from the classic tourist routes! How do you do it?

First of all: have lunch. In Rome there are many trattorias and pizzerias (the “trattoria” is a family-run restaurant with typical Roman cuisine), but how to find the right ones? Actually, it’s quite simple!

If you are already in a central and tourist area, take an alley moving 300/400 meters and ask for advice from passers-by. You simply have to be indicated a place to eat.

Lunch in a restaurant frequented by Romans is important for an immersion in the real atmosphere of the city and to enjoy dishes like spaghetti alla carbonara, bucatini all’amatriciana, spaghetti alla gricia, tonnarelli cacio e pepe, tripe alla romana, abbacchio, puntarelle and artichokes alla romana.

And how can we forget the wines? From the Cannellino di Frascati to the Cesanese del Piglio, from the wines of the Castelli Romani to Frascati Superiore. And last but not least, the maritozzi with cream, the puffs of San Giuseppe, the mostaccioli, the tiramisu, the ricotta tart and the sour cherry tart. Before leaving the restaurant, don’t forget to ask where the nearest ice cream parlour is!

In late spring and summer, temperatures rise and the best thing to do is take refuge in one of the many churches and cathedrals, where you can admire the works of art in the cool of the aisles.

Not to mention the fountains, squares and all those magnificent places that have inspired immortal films, such as Roma Città Aperta – Roberto Rossellini (1945), Vacanze romane – William Wyler (1954), Accattone – Pier Paolo Pasolini (1961), La ragazza che conosceva troppo – Mario Bava (1963), Roma – Federico Fellini (1972) and Una giornata particolare – Ettore Scola (1977).

If you love cinema, visit Cinecittà, where more than 4,000 films have been shot, 47 of which have been awarded an Oscar.

Reach Cinecittà by underground line A from Via Tuscolana, in the Don Bosco – Municipio Roma VII district. You can do all of that by visiting Rome on your own!

To reach our Civitatours bus you can take the free shuttles at your disposal at the pier of your ship. We kindly invite you to arrive at the meeting point not later than 09:15 am. The bus does just one stop in Largo della Pace, where you will find our staf with booking lists waiting for you. You will easily recognize them by the Civitatours signs they hold.
